Where to Place — and Where to Avoid Placing — Your Salt Lamp
Our Salt Lamp Buying Guide covers choosing the right size lamp for your room. This guide covers something different: which types of rooms and spots actually suit a salt lamp, and which ones don't.
Good placements
- Bedrooms and nurseries — a favourite spot, especially paired with a dimmer switch for a soft, ember-like glow in the evening.
- Living rooms and lounges — a natural focal point, especially near seating areas where the warm light is most enjoyed.
- Home offices and studies — many people prefer the ambient glow to harsh overhead lighting during evening work.
- Meditation or yoga spaces — a popular choice for calming, low-light environments.
Where to think twice
- Bathrooms — this is the placement to be most cautious about. Since salt is hygroscopic (it naturally attracts moisture from the air, as covered in our Lamp Buying Guide), a bathroom's high humidity — especially from hot showers — will cause your lamp to "sweat" far more than in a normal room. If you do want one in a bathroom, choose a well-ventilated spot away from the shower or bath, and expect more frequent wiping down.
- Near open windows in coastal or humid areas — South Africa's coastal regions already bring higher ambient humidity; a lamp placed right beside an open window may sweat more than one in a drier interior spot.
- Directly next to electronics — while an occasional drip from a "sweating" lamp isn't usually a major issue, it's sensible to avoid placing your lamp directly beside laptops, chargers, or other electronics, simply to avoid any moisture contact with sensitive equipment.
- Outdoor or semi-outdoor spaces — salt lamps are designed for indoor use. Rain or direct outdoor humidity exposure isn't what they're built for.
- On unprotected wooden furniture — always use the wooden base provided (or a coaster/mat) to protect surfaces from any moisture the lamp naturally releases.
A simple rule of thumb If a room regularly gets steamy or damp — think bathrooms after a shower, or a kitchen near boiling pots — that's not the ideal spot for a salt lamp. Drier, regularly-used living spaces are where these lamps perform, and look, their best.
